Associate Professor Ireland has greater than 20 years of Clinical expertise and Specialist experience with Hip, Knee and Shoulder Surgery.

Current Experience includes almost 4000 Joint Replacements using all recognised and validated types of prostheses, using minimal invasive techniques and over 1200 Shoulder Surgeries.

Assoc. Prof. Ireland utilises the latest Computer Navigation techniques for his patient’s Total Knee Replacements. “This technology improves accuracy which is particularly beneficial in younger more active patients.” Where possible, Assoc. Prof. Ireland utilises the anterior approach for Total Hip Replacements. “The patient benefits for an anterior approach hip replacement include the potential advantages of an earlier return to activities and work.

A cornerstone of Assoc. Prof. Ireland’s practice is to provide timely access to services. “We provide a whole of service approach to our Patients, from pre-surgery education to personalised rehabilitation programs that give our Patients the greatest opportunity for successful surgical outcomes”.

History

Associate Professor John Ireland is Sydney born and trained and graduated from the University of New south Wales in 1980. He is the 1980 Foundation Medallist in Medicine.

He was awarded his Fellowship from the Royal Australasian college of Surgery in 1990, and Fellow of the Australian Orthopaedic Association in 1994.

He completed a Fellowship in Joint Replacement surgery at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, Norfolk, UK.

He was also awarded AO and Zimmer traveling Fellowships in Joint Replacement surgery and Trauma.

He was formerly Head of the Orthopaedic Department at Liverpool Public Hospital and Chairman of the Whitlam Joint Replacement Centre.

John has recently been appointed Associate Professor in Orthopaedics at the Graduate School of Medicine, Wollongong University as well as retaining his existing appointment at New South Wales University
